Miguel and I have always been fans of dark beer and, occasionally, a solid imperial stout. So, in February 2021, we decided we’d make our own.
It was an exciting challenge for us, but at the same time, we were feeling the weight of the difficult times we were living through. The COVID pandemic had already lasted a year with no end in sight, and more than once, we found ourselves having some tense discussions about the future of our small brewery. At around the same time, the Perseverance rover touched down on Mars, and the name struck a chord with us.
“Perseverance” felt like the perfect word to describe our existing mode of operation: we were pushing forward through challenging times with the belief that things would eventually improve. And so, we decided to name our new beer after the rover and include it on the label as a symbol of hope.
We decided to hold off on releasing this beer until everything had calmed down and returned to normal until we could honestly say that “the Dark Times are over”.
We forgot to mention to our designers at Bloom Creative which rover we wanted exactly, and the Opportunity rover ended up on the label instead of Perseverance. But in the end, we decided to keep it since it hinted at the good times still to come.
Grab a bottle of Dark Times, and cheers to perseverance and resilience!
