In a dangerously cramped underground tavern, a group of comrades share a tense chat and a quick drink. Interrupted by an unwelcome stranger, they are forced to share a whisky together. This scene from Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds is one of Jean’s favourites. And it is this scene from which our latest core range beer takes its name.
When Miguel decided that he would be chucking in whisky barrel chips into the fermentation tank of the next beer he brewed, he followed it up with a statement that it could go either way. Not-reassuring to say the least! Having received Miguel’s brief of the plan and having gone over the recipe together, all the potential pitfalls and risk of disaster reminded Jean of the scene. Or maybe it was just the mention of whisky.
The final moment of truth in that tavern came when Lt. Hicox raised his glass, calling his rival “old boy” in salute to his experience, signalling both the start of what is to come, and the demise which surely follows. And so the name stuck.
The oak chips used in this recipe came from whisky barrels which had reached their end of life – rather than ending up as yet another table in a bar, this oak was given a fresh breath of life as it lives to die another day.
Long live circular economies!
